Willy Russell's hit play, Educating Rita, is coming to the State Theatre's Studio Space. Directed by Elaine Meder-Wilgus, the production stars Wilson Hutton and Susan Riddiford Shedd.
If Mr. Russell had called his play "Educating Frank", its title wouldn't be as sexy but it wouldn't be less accurate. Education sometimes cuts both ways. If the play poses the cultural question, "Does being able to discuss the novels of E.M> Forster make you a better person?" it no less compellingly asks the personal one, "Can an unlikely student rescue a burnt-out teacher from cynicism and self-destruction?"
Here's a thirty-year-old play that's as alive as if it were written last week!

Joel Meyerowitz: Bay Sky Porch June 3, 2008 - September 28, 2008 |
Add to Itinerary |
Location: Palmer Museum of Art
Phone: 814-865-7673
The constant change of the sea and unpredictability of the sea attracted photographer Joel Meyerowitz to Cape Cod and the city of Provincetown, Massachusetts, in the mid-1970s. After beginning his artistic career as a street photographer in New York City, Meyerowitz replaced his 35-millimeter with an 8 x 10 view camera and embraced the slower pace of life found on the Cape. The early influence of the photojournalistic snapshot did not entirely dissipate, however. A sense of immediacy and spontaneity emerges through Meyerowitz's inclusion of boats and shifting tide levels, creating a poetic tale of the languid, ever-changing life of the sea. This exhibition presents Meyerowitz's venture on Cape Cod, a portfolio of photographs grouped collectively under the title Bay Sky Porch, published in the late 1970s. In these works, which are drawn from the Palmer's permanent collection, Meyerowitz documents the changing light and atmospheric conditions, noting the subtle changes, "the book of hours," inscribed in nature. With the sea as the constant backdrop, Meyerowitz uses objects and structures associated with the human world, including awnings, thin columns, wooden railings, and painted boats, to frame his subject. The framing devices not only create unexpected components in the photographs, but also provide a point of entry for the viewer in an otherwise intangible and enigmatic seascape.
Please contact Joyce Robinson, curator, for more information on the exhibition at 814-865-7673 or through email at jhr11@psu.edu.

When 24 senior citizens get together in their small town of New England, they don't knit or play checkers; they sing. The Young @ Heart choir of Northhampton, Massachusetts sings its own interpretations of songs ranging from classic rock n' roll and R&B all the way to more contemporary rock and punk. THis documentary shows the choir's seven week journey of both success and struggle before its culminating one-night performance in its hometown. This group of retirees from all backgrounds comes together to express their feelings and passions through music, showing that one is never too old to sing, and no mattr the age on the outside, the person can have the youngest, richest spirit on the inside. It's an inspiring story that will open up the heart!
